Falcon Chambers 2015 Seminar Series

These seminars are on topical areas of property law and are aimed at practitioners of up to 5 years pqe and will be useful to solicitors, surveyors and any other professionals working in the property industry . The seminars are given by members of Falcon Chambers. The seminars will last for an hour and will have a strong emphasis on participation and exchange of views between the professionals attending. Each seminar will start at 5.30pm and carry 1 CPD rating. The subjects and dates are as follows:-

21st January – Game On: Rent as an expense in administration

In what circumstances will an insolvent tenant’s landlord be entitled to rent as an administration expense? Does it make any difference if the tenant enters into administration the day after rent is due? The seminar will explore the status of rent as an expense in administration following the decision in Re Games Station Limited [2014] EWCA Civ 180. This seminar will be led by Joseph Ollech and Jamie Sutherland.

24th February – The Right to Manage – the basics

The Seminar will provide an overview of the operation of the Right to Manage scheme for residential blocks introduced by the Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Act 2002. They will consider some current issues in the light of recent decisions including the question of which premises are subject to the Act and how a landlord can resist an application. The seminar will also focus on how the procedure works in practice and what the common pitfalls are for each side. This seminar will be led by Philip Sissons and Tricia Hemans.

25th March – The Landlord and Tenant Act 1954: tactics for success and recent developments

This seminar will be of interest to anyone dealing with business tenancies under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954. Tamsin Cox and Toby Boncey will consider various legal and tactical issues relating to renewals of business tenancies from the perspectives of both landlord and tenant, to provide a reminder of familiar basics and consider recent developments, including the recent case of Boots v Goldpine in relation to the proper approach to interim rents. The seminar will be led by Tamsin Cox and Toby Boncey.

28th April – Getting your house in order: residential property an update

The seminar will provide an overview of key recent developments within residential housing law including:

• Residential service charges and qualifying works following Philips v Francis
• Tenancy Deposit Schemes and nightmare tenants 
• Residential human rights post McDonald v McDonald.

The seminar will be led by Kester Lees and Ciara Fairley.

The cost per seminar is £30 + VAT, numbers are limited so early booking is recommended.
