Funding
The pupillage award for pupils commencing pupillage in October 2024 will be £75,000. Up to £24,000 is available for draw-down during the year preceding pupillage. Incoming pupils should not hesitate to contact chambers during that year to make arrangements for receipt of their drawdown if they wish to take it. In addition, in their second six months, pupils can expect to earn some additional income from their own work.
The first three months of tenancy are rent-free to those joining chambers as tenants at the end of pupillage. We also guarantee the first-year earnings of new tenants; that is to say, if they experience a shortfall in receipts below the level of the pupillage award, calculated on a monthly basis, we will make up the difference, as a loan. That is very unlikely to be the required in the first year of practice after pupillage, however.
